Types of IP Cameras
A look at fixed body, fixed dome (mini-dome), and PTZ IP cameras
Many types of IP cameras are available today, including fixed body IP cameras, fixed dome IP cameras (also known as mini-domes), and PTZ IP cameras. Before selecting an IP camera, it is important to understand which type of IP camera is best for the specific application you have in mind and the benefits and drawbacks of the various types of IP cameras available to you.
Fixed Body IP Cameras
Fixed body cameras are characterized by a rectangular body and a fixed viewing angle. It is clear where this type of camera is pointing.
| Ideal Environment | Fixed body cameras are especially effective where the risk of vandalism is relatively low and where visibility and the clear direction of the camera are likely to act as deterrents to undesirable activity. |
| Top Benefit | Fixed body cameras can use a variety of exchangeable lenses. |
| Top Drawback | Fixed body cameras are relatively easy to tamper with. |
Fixed Dome IP Cameras (Mini-Domes)
This is a fixed camera pre-installed in small dome-like housing. It is difficult to see where this type of camera is pointing.
| Ideal Environment | Fixed dome cameras (mini-domes) are especially effective when the uncertainty of the viewing angle can deter potential wrongdoers. |
| Top Benefit | Mini-domes have a discreet, unobtrusive design with a clear or tinted dome and can be mounted on walls or ceilings. |
| Top Drawback | These cameras use only one type of lens. |
PTZ IP Cameras
PTZ cameras come in a standard or dome housing.
| Ideal Environment | PTZ cameras are especially effective when live monitoring is needed and/or it is necessary to track an individual activity or an object’s movement. PTZ cameras can be operated in guard tour mode, allowing the camera to move between preset positions, and can be controlled using joysticks. Mounting kits are also available to allow for outdoor or indoor installations. |
| Top Benefit | The PTZ camera lens can be adjusted remotely to capture different views from a single location. |
| Top Drawback | PTZ cameras are more expensive and can miss key activity. |
